Anchor in the Storm
"Anchor In The Storm"
Sarah Sundin

America has just entered WWII and Lillian's brother, Jim is in the Navy.  Lillian Avery has just finished Pharmacy School and is on her way to Boston for her first job as a full fledged pharmacist.  But her new boss is quick to tell her that she was hired only because all the men are at war.  He is not happy to learn of her handicap either.

Because of her handicap, and something that happened with an old boy friend, she doesn't trust men.  Her brother Jim's best friend, Archer, sets out to change her mind.

Meanwhile Lillian begins to notice a lot of prescription for barbiturates being filled, but is told that the doctor knows what he is doing.  However, Lillian's conscience won't let her do this.  She decides to try to solve the problem herself and ends up in danger.

Will she survive?  Can Arch ever earn Lillian's love and trust?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I do all of Sarah Sundin's books.  I loved the fact that she has a theme to the book - Jesus is our Anchor in a time of storm and how her dad gave her an anchor necklace to remind her that Jesus is our Anchor, our Hope in any storm, our Refuge.  This spoke to me so much that I bought an anchor necklace for myself.

What Jim doesn't know is that Mary has always had a crush on him.  But he only had eyes for a sparkling blond named Quintessa, Mary's best friend.

But as they work together, Jim begins to forget Quintessa and sees Mary as someone he could love forever.

Just as things seem to be heading in the right direction for Jim and Mary, Quintessa shows up after being dumped by her boyfriend.  So she comes to Boston in pursuit of Jim.

Meanwhile, the sabotage is escalating, putting both Jim and Mary in danger.

Sarah Sundin is a wonderful historical novelist.  She does such thorough research.   She portrays her stories so real to life that you feel as if you are there!

This novel gave insight to how tense American feelings were prior World War II.  I admit that it did take me a while to get into it, but once I did, I really enjoyed it.  Reading about all of the technical ship stuff was kind of difficult because I'm not familiar with ships.

Mary was a true heroine in this book!  God gave her the strength to overcome her fears.  Once she overcame them, she was used of God more and became the person God intended her to be.

I love how Jim and Mary encouraged each other in the Lord.  The way they openly talked about God to each other was refreshing.  They trusted God throughout the whole book, with big things and small things,   not just when it was convenient. Since they already trusted God with the small things, it was a lot easier for them to trust God with the big things.  That is how we should be as well.

I love WWII historical novels and Sarah is one of the best authors for writing them!

Where Treetops Glisten

Where Treetops Glisten
"Where Treetops Glisten"
Tricia Goyer, Cara Putman, Sarah Sundin

"Where Treetops Glisten" tells the story of the Turner family, who live in Lafayette, Indiana.  It is a complication of three stories written by three different authors.  The time is the Second World War.  But each story is set in a different year and focuses on a different Turner child.  it also focuses on a different Christmas Song written in that year.

Cara Putman tells us the story of Abigail in "White Christmas".  She is going to college and working at a one-of-a-kind candy shop.  But due to the loss of her boyfriend, to the war, she is done with romance.  Until a hard-working young man with a serious problem needs her help.

"I'll Be Home For Christmas" is by Sarah Sundin and about Abigail's brother, Pete.  Pete is a fighter pilot hero returned fro mteh European Theater.  Even though the war has changed him for the better, he has to convince the hometown folks of that fad.  Especially a widowed mother of a precocious little girl in need of Pete's friendship.  Can he convince her he is no longer a bully?

And last we hear the story of Meredith in Tricia Goyer's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas".  She is a combat nurse on the front lines in the Netherlands.  Halfway around the world she has to face her deepest betrayal head on, which is what God had planned to heal her broken heart.

The Turner family relies on God's strength during a tumultuous time.  Will each of the Turner children find their way home for  Christmas?

I don't know when I have enjoyed a book as much as I have this one.  Even though it is written by three different authors, all of the stories flow together as one.  I enjoyed the book being set in a real town and based on real stories.
I also didn't realize that the three Christmas songs were written during WWII.  An added bonus were the Christmas recipes an all-around enjoyable book.  Would definitely make a great Christmas gift!

I enjoyed this book.  Sarah Sundin provides a history lesson without the reader even being aware of it.  She makes history interesting.  I did not care for somethings that happened to Kay, but I suppose the author was teaching a moral lesson as well.
